MARTHA OAKES

Martha Oakes is an interior designer and artist based in Cumberland, Maine, known for a collaborative, hands-on approach to residential design. She works closely with clients on projects of all sizes, creating spaces that are both functional and thoughtfully composed.

Her work is rooted in the belief that interiors should reflect the people who live in them. Each project begins with listening and understanding how the client lives and what they value. Drawing on a background in architecture, interior design, and visual art, Martha creates intimate and layered interiors that are highly personal and have a timeless quality. With a strong emphasis on incorporating vintage heirlooms and custom craftsmanship, Martha creates unique spaces that evoke a sense of modest sophistication. Her aesthetic is pared back and quietly expressive, favoring natural materials, neutral palettes, and homes that age gracefully.

Martha holds a bachelor’s degree from the College of Architecture + Planning at The University of Colorado, and brings experience from leading design firms in New York, Philadelphia, and the Boston area, as well as retail interior design work for a national apparel brand based in San Francisco.

Originally from London, with past and current family ties to Martha’s Vineyard and San Francisco, Martha now lives in Cumberland, Maine with her husband and two young children.
